About Athol, Idaho
Athol is a growing town that is rich in history. First settled in 1882 Athol was first known as Colton, the town was renamed Athol by a settler who came from Athol, Massachusetts. The Massachusetts Athol was named for a town in Scotland named for the Duke of Atholl. No one knows the lineage of the family of how that came to pass. For more reading Check here!
Athol is also home to Farragut State Park! Those of us that live in the area play at Farragut often. Make sure you buy your state park pass at the DMV when you license your vehicle. For $10 you have parking at all of Idaho’s parks.

Community and things to do
Athol has A good sense of community. Not uncommon for there to be the annual Christmas party where the whole neighborhood gets together for a gift exchange and food. There are some good spots to dine in Athol also. You will find one of the best steaks ever at the Saddle UP Grill. I also love the burgers. Howie the chef will probably be out to say Hi! Great atmosphere and lots of friendly faces. Country boy Cafe is a great spot to catch breakfast by the way.
Lakeland School and Merritt Lumber are the city’s largest employers. Most residents commute to nearby larger cities to work and shop.
According to the 2014 census, Athol has a whopping 624 residents. I think that number is off a little but certainly a great small town.

You will find that most of the houses are on at least 5 acres and quite common to be 10 acre lots. There are some areas of smaller acreage and a few properties in town with quarter acre lots or smaller. Price range can be all over the board depending on what you are after.

Hotels/ Lodging / Camping
For Hotels, you’re going to want to look at probably staying in Hayden Idaho. There is a very nice Holiday Inn Express on the North Side of Hayden right off Hwy 95. There is not much that I want to recommend to you for a Hotel in Athol. That will leave you about 10 minutes away from Silverwood if that is the reason for your visit. for Camping and RV Camping we have a good selection. The fairly new Ravenwood RV Resort, Silverwood RV Park, and Farragut State Park all keep you close.
Proximity to Major Towns
This is a town that has something for everyone. There are areas of the Athol area that are open and flat without a lot of trees or you can be on the outskirts either towards Bayview or towards Spirit Lake where it is very treed. Distance to getting into town is not bad it takes me about 15 minutes to get into North Hayden or about 15 minutes to get to Post Falls. I am about 7 minutes to Rathdrum depending on the path taken. A small grocery store in Athol and also in Spirit Lake and plenty of necessity shopping in Rathdrum. You are also about 20 minutes from Sandpoint Idaho.
Being minutes to Lake Pend O’reille you are certainly in everything water sports. You also to the North of you have Granite and Kelso Lake. And to the West, you are only about 10 minutes away from Spirit Lake. Head South and your about 15 minutes to Lake Coeur d’ Alene. Lots of hiking at Farragut State Park, or check out Round Lake your not very far from that one either. Horseback riding. Skiing. 30 minutes to Schweitzer, about an hour to Look Out Pass, and 4th of July Pass. Like to snowshoe or cross-country ski check out Panhandle Nordic Club for some new friends.
