Kootenai County Location

Kootenai County is located in North Idaho or the Idaho panhandle which is what North Idaho is referred to.  With Bonner and Boundary county to the North and Shoshone County to the East.  Kootenai County is about 40 minutes away from Spokane International Airport and about 20 minutes away from Spokane Wa.  North Idaho stands out as an area that can offer someone the best of all the things Idaho has to offer. Here’s a look at Kootenai County, and why you might find it an ideal place to make your home.

Demographics

Kootenai County is home to about 150,000 people. It’s enough to maintain social activities, friendships, and gatherings. But it’s not so many that you will feel cloistered or hemmed in by your neighbors. There are over 12,000 veterans in Kootenai County, which may tell you something about the character of the place. The population has a somewhat even split between men and women.

Kootenai County Special Features

Like most of Idaho, Kootenai County is home to forests, mountain peaks, and waterways. Mica Peak, or Signal Point, is a summit in the county, and you can see it from nearly anywhere.

There’s also the Coeur d’Alene National Forest and Kaniksu National Forest, both protected areas. No matter what part of the county you go to, you will always have an awesome view and closeness to nature around you.

One of our most special selling features is our water.  Placed over one of the largest aquifiers in the country.  Learn more about that here.  Glacial Lake Missoula

Kootenai County Lakes and Waterways

Kootenai County contains many lakes and waterways. In fact, for those that like lake properties, Kootenai County is an ideal place for just that. In all, you will find 15 lakes and around 235 streams in the county.

The largest lake in the county is Lake Coeur d’Alene. It’s 25 miles long and has 109 miles of shoreline. It contains several bays around it. Lake Coeur d’Alene isn’t the only lake in the county. Here are a few of the larger lakes in the county.

Kootenai County Weather

North Idaho is blessed with 4 seasons.  Winter averages in the low 30s with lows dipping down into the single digits for a couple of weeks every winter.

Summer is pretty comfortable in the 80s on average with a week or 2 that tops out in the upper 90s to 100 degrees.

In spring you can expect rain and lite snow.  Depending on which part of the county you live in is going to depend on how much rain and snow you get.

The Spirit Lake and Twin Lakes area are more in the snow belt so expect a heavier snow load as compared to the least amount of snow in Post Falls.

You can plan on having at least 2 -3 weeks longer growing season in Post Falls and CDA than you will in the Northern part of the county.

Fall is a lovely time of the year when the Tamaracks are changing color.  It is probably most locals’ favorite time of the year.  The days are getting shorter a little crisp in the air but still very nice.

To learn about current road conditions be sure to check the Idaho Transportation Dept.  Here.

The Towns of kootenai County

There are about two dozen areas in Kootenai County designated as cities or other types of communities. The city of Coeur d’Alene, which shares the name of the lake, holds the majority of those who live in Kootenai County.

Its population is around a third of the total population of the county. It has a close connection to Spokane to the west. If you feel you need the trappings of city life around you, without living in a very large city, then Coeur d’Alene can represent a good choice for you.

To learn more about the community check out Keeping Kootenai here.

However, many people in the county choose to live a little out from Coeur d’Alene. Some of the more picturesque areas include:

Athol

Bayview

Coeur d’ Alene

Harrison

Hayden

Post-Falls

Rathdrum

Spirit Lake
