Lead and Lead Base Paint

Older Homes & the Silver Valley Concerns

If you are buying a home that was built pre-1978, you will be presented with a Lead Base Paint Disclosure. If you’re buying a home in North Idaho and the home is in the Silver Valley (Kellogg area) you’ll also get a Lead Base Paint Disclosure Form and information about the Bunker Hill Superfund Site

Lead-Based Paint Brochure

Here is a link to the Lead in Your Home Brochure.

You will want to take a few minutes and review the lead base paint booklet.  It explains how to mitigate the lead and remove it safely if you decide to do so.  A lot of the Silver Valley has already been mitigated for lead but you need to be aware that it was there and what has been done to the lot that you are considering.

 Testing for Lead

Most of the homes that I see tested for paint- have been painted over so many times that unless you were to scrap the paint off you probably would not test positive for lead.  But you should always educate yourself and be comfortable with your decisions.

Testing for lead base paint is also a decision that you need to make prior to us writing the contract.  It is something that we would notify the sellers of that we are going to test.

Resources about Lead

You can also find more information on the Silver Valley lead in the ground by checking out Panhandle Health and the Bunker Hill Links.  https://panhandlehealthdistrict.org/institutional-controls-program/

You can find additional information here:  https://panhandlehealthdistrict.org/lead-health-information/

If you are considering property in that area you should certainly check out as much information as you can about it so that you are not surprised by all of the additional disclosures when it is time to make your offer.
