North Idaho or the Panhandle as we call it is made up of 5 counties. Kootenai ( which is the Coeur d’ Alene area) Bonner County ( The Sandpoint area) Boundary County ( Bonners Ferry area) Shoshone County ( Kellogg area) and Benewah County ( St Maries area). All of these counties are diverse in price range with Kootenai typically being the most expensive and Benewah is probably the most affordable. They all have a little different topography and pockets of everything in each.

As you are considering what county suits you and checking out the different amenities in each area utilties are pretty simple in North Idaho. Natural gas is only available in major towns overall there are some pockets of rural new construction getting natural gas but not typically everywhere. Electric companies that serve the area are Avista, Kootenai Electric Cooperative and Northern lights. Panhandle Health takes care of all septic info and depending if you are in town or out city water is available typically in all towns. Otherwise you are served by a community system in some of the tighter comnunities or a well. We have multiple well drillers around the area we are happy to recommend. The Idaho Department of Water Resources is a great place to do some well exploring.

Kootenai County touches Washington State at Post Falls and Stateline area and carries into Coeur d’ Alene. It also goes South including most of Lake Coeur d’ Alene to Harrison area and North to Lake Pend Oreille in the Bayview Area and Spirit Lake. 5 good size lakes in this county. Cities available include: Rathdrum, Coeur d’ Alene, Post Falls, Harrison, Hayden, Athol Bayview and Spirit Lake. Do note that both Athol and Spirit Lake sit at the North of Kootenai County and also are in Bonner County.

Shoshone County located between Kootenai County ( Coeur d’ Alene ) and the Montana Border. Lots of recreational opportunities in this county! 2 ski resorts, lots of mountains and some of the most historic area in North Idaho. Home to historic Wallace, Ski Towns Kellogg and Mullan and some of the most beautiful land you will ever see.

Located South of Coeur d’ Alene this county has the lower half of Lake Coeur d’ Alene, Heyburn State Park and some gorgeous sections of The trails of the Coeur d’ Alene. A recreational paradise.
